A Life of Service: Dr. Richard Honer

Dr. Richard Honer has spent his life serving others through medical care, mentorship, and community support—both locally and internationally.

From 1999 to 2019, he participated in medical mission trips to San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, performing life-saving general surgeries for people of all ages. Working long 10-hour days, his team often completed 90 surgeries in just four days. Patients would line up in need of care, a testament to the critical medical services he and his team provided.

In March 2011, Dr. Honer took his passion for accessible healthcare further by founding Angel Care, a free medical clinic that provided essential healthcare services to underserved individuals. Patients could receive routine checkups, and those in need of surgery or hospitalization were referred to We Care, where they were treated at no cost. This initiative ensured that financial barriers never stood in the way of quality medical care. Dr. Honer led the clinic’s efforts until stepping down in 2018.

Beyond his medical work, Dr. Honer has been a dedicated mentor and coach. Since 2000, he has coached cross country at Lake Region High School, guiding and inspiring young athletes both on and off the track. His impact extended to track and field, which he has coached since 2001, fostering discipline, teamwork, and personal growth in countless students.

His service to student-athletes didn’t stop at coaching. From 2000 to 2024, Dr. Honer provided free physicals for high school athletes, ensuring they could safely participate in sports. For more than two decades, he volunteered his medical expertise, a role he continued until BayCare took over student physicals.

A Lasting Impact

Dr. Honer’s lifelong commitment to service has transformed lives, bringing hope, healing, and opportunity to countless individuals. His compassion and dedication embody the very essence of the Humanitarian Service Award.

As we celebrate the 2025 Voices Awards, we recognize Dr. Richard Honer’s extraordinary contributions and the lasting legacy he has built through his unwavering commitment to humanity.
